Mr. Higgins is an internationally trained Consultant Ophthalmologist, having trained in Ireland, UK and Australia. He obtained an honours degree in medicine at University College Cork in 1998, after which he gained a doctorate in medicine for his research thesis on Light induced Oxidation in the Pathogenesis of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
He trained in Cork and then Liverpool as an Ophthalmic Surgeon and pursued subspecialty training in Oculoplastic surgery in Liverpool. His fellowship in Corneal, Cataract and Refractive surgery was awarded in the Lions Eye Institute, Perth, Western Australia.
Mr. Higgins has published peer-reviewed research papers and a book chapter on a variety of topics. He was a grant recipient from Fighting Blindness for his research thesis and has won prizes for his research presentations. He is a native of Waterford and, has a passion for landscape and travel photography.
